What sets apart California from European tradition is that winemakers are free to grow numerous grape types as opposed to the strict European appellation laws that limit varieties according to geographic locations. California's freedom to experiment ensures the flexibility of making and maintaining the finest quality wines.

It is in the American tradition that Oregon favors the Pinot Noir grape and Washington represents the Bordeaux, each state with its own goals in perfecting wine. All of these notable wine-making states truly represent America.
